Donna Salazar Sep I

Below post has gone live on the Donna Salazar Blog today:

Today I am  hoping to change the general perception that grunge and glitter are not combinable....just like some peeps think there can be no flowers on masculine layouts or that boys cannot wear pink.

Be daring, step outside the box and embrace a change in your usual craftiness :)

When we were given our theme of change for the month of September, I was forever looking for a picture that would fit a layout with this theme - this one of Mr P and I finally did fit the bill, for what I had in mind.
We live on a small island close to the mainland of the United Kingdom. If we ever want to travel to one of the closest cities to us, we have to rely on ferry transport.
About once a year we would visit the city of Portsmouth for a day, but the last two times we went there we really disliked it and vowed never to return.

This April, when Mr P's Mom paid us a visit we decided that we should take her over to Portsmouth on the ferry as she had not been there with us before. We had the most amazing time and were so grateful that we changed our minds and decided to give it one more try - we discovered so many new areas, that we will be back for sure!

To create my layout I took a selection of paper scraps from Donna's Antiquities line, distressed the edges and started layering.

I think one of my favourite papers from the line is Theater because you pretty much have your paper strips mapped out in front of you and if you cut along the lines wisely, you don't even have to ink the edges...just looks how beautiful this paper is:

Once all my paper strips and paper scraps were layered, I started to outline the papers with a black pen - I love that it somehow adds dimension to the layout as it "lifts" the individual pieces, especially when you use different pen strokes.

Look closely and see that I have used straight lines on one strip, a dashed line on another and a faux machine stitch on the third.

Now I could start my all time favourite part of creating - misting like there is NO tomorrow. And this time I was eager to try one of Donna's techniques to spritz some plain water on the background before I add the Smooch Spritz. I LOVE how it created a total grungy feel.

I cannot praise Donna's Tuesday Tutoials enough and I urge you the check them out, as you will find a plethora of wicked tips and techniques been handed to you on a silver plate corrugated cardboard by Donna.

Currently I also love trying out different techniques on tags, then cut them apart an layer them underneath pictures.

For this layout, I distressed a manilla tag by running Clearsnap cats eye chalk inks in dark moss, chestnut roan and dark brown along the edges and to stencil images onto the tag. I then used my favourite stamp from Donna's collection, the All My Love script and stamped it all over the tag - I really love the effect it created.

Did you know that you can also use the Corrugated Board with your Spellbinders dies?
Well, now you do because I simply HAD to try it as I envisaged the corrugated board would look ace with the Sprightly Sprockets die - and I was right, check it out:

I created this kind of "white-washed-wooden-feel" with the help of white embossing powder from Clearsnap. The trick is not to ink the complete shape with the Watermark pad, but do it randomly. Then sprinkle the embossing powder on top, and tap off any excess powder. It will only stick to those areas which have remained wet from the ink pad.

Last but by no means least - let's see how I combined grunge and glitter.

First of I created a flower by layering some blossom shapes punched from the Crafty Chronicle. I then ran Cat's Eye Chalk Ink in chestnut roan over each shape. I glued them on top of each other and added some Glue Gloss over the lot. Now for the "icing" on the cake flower, sprinkle a generous helping of Fairy Dust Glitter on top. Additionally, running off from the the flower, I cut one of the gorgeous Want2Scrap scrolls in half and placed the two bits on either side.

But there is more....

I used the edge of an empty toilet roll as a circle stamp and lathered it with white paint. The lathering ensures that you get an uneven distribution of the paint, which screams "grunge" in my book :). Afterwards I added random blobs of paint on top and next to the stamped circles, pressed some beads into the wet paint and dabbed some more white paint on top of them.

Once the paint was dry, I spritzed some Smooch in Pralines and Cream on top, added Glossy Accents from Ranger and sprinkled some more Fairy Dust Glitter on top. The Glossy Accents will ensure that the beads are firmly stuck to the paper and that the glitter will stick too.

So, what do you think - is it time to change our thinking and combine techniques and  products we never thought would work together?
